ROMAN WAY OF LIFE

ROMAN FOOD:

Most people in the Roman Empire lived on the Mediterranean Diet (olive oil, wine, wheat…)

If they were rich, they could also eat beef, pork, lamb, chicken and fish.

If they were poor, they ate lentils, apples, figs, nuts, cheese and eggs.

Do you know which 3 animals match the 3 different types of meat underlined?

ROMAN CLOTHING:

Roman people wore clothes made of wool or linen tunics.

On their feet, they wore leather sandals or boots.

In their hair, women wore wooden hairsticks or combs.

For special occasions, they wore togas and, if they had a stripe on heir toga, it meant they were rich and powerful.

Can you think of any piece of clothing made of the underlined materials?

ROMAN MAKE-UP:

Men and women used beauty products to make themselves seem healthier and more
beautiful, but also to show they were rich.

Women used whitening creams to make themselves look paler and therefore richer.

They used amounts of perfume: women who smelled good were presumed to be healthy.
Some men also used cosmetics although it seemed effeminate.

What do you do in order to look healthier and more beautiful?
